About the Shared Reading Project

For over a decade, The Reader has been improving health and changing lives through reading. The work they deliver decreases stress, improves mental health, creates vital human connections and supports people to live well. It also provides a platform for professional development and job enrichment. They bring their Shared Reading approach to many settings, from hospitals and recovery centres to libraries and care homes – and those who read and train with our partner, The Reader, report improved confidence, greater job satisfaction and deeper connections to the communities they serve.

This project is being facilitated by The Reader and Bristol Ageing Better as part of the project ‘Group Work and Peers Support’. They will deliver weekly reading groups inclusive of older people with dementia where people will be able to listen to poems and stories read aloud, reflecting on what its read and sharing thoughts and responses. Already, The Reader has a growing body of research showing key health benefits to those who read within these groups.
