A chance to celebrate a moment in our cultural history when working-class kids bought guitars, learnt three chords and revitalized a moribund music scene. The late seventies were an explosion of musical energy and creativity led by the Sex Pistols, the Clash and the Damned and building on foundations laid by Dr Feelgood. At the same time a new scene was emerging in New York club CBGB’s that gave us Television, Blondie and the Ramones (among others) whilst The Dead Kennedy’s were gestating in California.
We will begin our look at these famous (and often infamous) bands with a viewing of Don Letts powerful documentary Punk: Attitude which features sharp analysis and stunning original footage.
We will also test your knowledge of some of the lesser lights of the burgeoning punk scene with a short quiz before welcoming ‘The Mutoids’ onstage for an hour of vintage punk classics with songs from the Pistols, Clash and the Damned as well as SLF, Wire, The Members, Dead Kennedys, Tenpole Tudor and many others.
Sure to be a night to remember. Bring out your old bondage trousers and prepare to pogo it’s gonna be a noisy one at the Old Library!
